As I reflect on the journey that led to the creation of Zulucow, I’m filled with a profound sense of gratitude and purpose.
This journey began not just with a desire to start a business but with a deep-rooted commitment to honour my heritage and support talented female artisans in South Africa.
I wanted to uplift the remarkable women who have shaped my life while creating sustainable, ethically made Nguni cowhide bags and interiors.
Where My Journey of Purpose and Empowerment Began
After leaving my career at the BBC and embracing motherhood, I felt a calling to channel my energy into something meaningful – something that would give back to the communities that had left an indelible mark on my soul. With my South African husband by my side, I embarked on a mission to build a purpose-driven brand. One that would celebrate the strength and craftsmanship of the Zulu women I had encountered throughout my life.
From the outset, my vision for Zulucow was clear: to create a sustainable business with a transparent supply chain. One that bypassed middlemen and established direct relationships with artisans, ensuring fair wages and ethical production. This decision was more than just a business strategy, it was a commitment to ethical fashion and responsible sourcing – values that are at the heart of every handcrafted Nguni cowhide bag, cushion, and accessory we create.
Why Zulucow?
In the rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal, I met Ma Beatrice, a wise and inspiring woman whose skill and resilience embodied the spirit of her people. Alongside her daughter and a collective of talented Zulu women, she transforms sustainably sourced Nguni cowhide and leather into beautifully handcrafted bags, belts, and home accessories, each piece carrying the essence of their heritage.

Working with Ma Beatrice, Ma Philippine, and the Zulu women has been a transformative experience. Over the years, we’ve built strong friendships and a shared commitment to empowering women through traditional craftsmanship. In a country facing economic hardship, these women have found financial independence and purpose through their artistry, proving that ethical fashion has the power to change lives.

For more than a decade, Zulucow has been more than just a business. It’s been a beacon of empowerment. It’s a celebration of South African heritage, sustainable fashion, and the artistry of handmade cowhide products that honour both people and the planet.
What Does the Future Hold for Zulucow?
As I look ahead, I know that true success isn’t measured in sales alone, it’s about the lives we impact and the opportunities we create. The story of Zulucow is woven into the fabric of ethical fashion and sustainable business, proving that purposeful entrepreneurship can create lasting change.
Through every Nguni cowhide bag, handcrafted rug, and artisan made accessory, we continue to tell a story of resilience, reinvention, and empowerment. And as I continue this journey, I do so with deep gratitude – for the incredible artisans, the customers who support us, and the chance to make a real difference in the world of ethical, handmade fashion.
