The Beauty & Provenance of Zulucow’s Unique, Sustainably-Sourced Nguni Cowhide Rugs

I had the most interesting message from one of my Instagram followers about Nguni cowhide, and I thought it was such a great point that I’d share it with you.

She said:

“I want more information about the Nguni cattle. If it were my business I would go as far as to have a small nod to the cattle inside the bag, especially in this ever changing animal welfare/vegan world.  I think it would be very respectful to reference it. My daughter actually pointed out that where she adored the bag, she would like to have the backstory of Nguni cattle to tell any potential admirer.”

Well, she’s absolutely right. There is a beautiful story behind these hides, and it’s one I’m proud of.

So here it is…

Why Nguni Cows Are So Special

Nguni cows have always been admired and deeply respected in South Africa, especially by the Zulus.

Traditionally, they were bred for their meat, and their hides were used for ceremonial clothing, shields, and rugs.

These cattle are part of South African heritage. Hardy, beautiful, and so distinctive with their incredible markings.

Even now, when I’m in South Africa with my Zulucow bags and belts, I’m constantly stopped at security or check-in by people asking, “Where did you get that bag?”

They know and love Nguni hides for their beauty and quality.

From Heritage to Handbag – With Purpose

Today, Zulucow is proud to celebrate this history in a sustainable way.

The hides I use are a by product of the meat industry, so nothing is wasted. Instead of being discarded, these beautiful hides are transformed into one of a kind bags, belts, rugs, and cushions.

And the best part is that every piece creates jobs for women like Ma Thandi, Neli, and Gcinile – giving them the chance to earn a fair income, send their children to school, and make choices that benefit the environment, rather than decisions based purely on survival.

When you carry a Zulucow bag, you’re not just holding a beautiful accessory. You’re holding a story, of craftsmanship, heritage, and empowerment.

In a world of mass production, this is something real and rare.

Ethical, Sustainable, and Made to Last

Our hides are tanned in government regulated tanneries in South Africa, with strict environmental controls to keep chemicals out of water systems.

Each hide can be traced back to its source, and I personally choose every single one for its markings and colour.

Every bag, rug, and belt is handmade in small quantities.

There’s no big factory waste here, even the smallest scraps are used. Leather and hide are precious, so nothing is thrown away.

Choose Zulucow, Choose Slow Fashion.

Something sustainable, unique, and built to last for years, not just a season.

I hope that gives you a little more insight into why these pieces are so special. And if you’ve been thinking of adding one to your collection, now is a wonderful time.

Thank you for being part of this journey with me.

It means the world to me and to the amazing Zulu ladies who make these treasures.
